I've dealt with Ottawa Solar for 18 years, with multiple installations and follow-up services. I've also recommended them to family and friends. In every single case Mike has shown to be responsive, trustworthy, friendly and fair. Doesn't try to sell you equipment you don't need - he treats you like a friend and recommends what makes sense for you. I'm sure this is why he has so much customer loyalty. As anyone who has owned these systems will know - individual component pieces can be a commodity, but the thoughtful advice on the entire system purchase and the after sale service relationship is critical to protecting the investment and avoiding tons of headaches. If we could leave a 10-star review, we would. When we set out to build our forever home, we encountered Ontario Hydro layout rates. A few internet searches later, and we were on the phone with Mike. Mike set aside a good hour and a half to review the lifestyle adjustments we might need to make for living off-grid, powering our home with Solar. He was very patient, clear and detailed in what we should expect and how to review our needs. During the build process he and his team were flexible and accommodating. We used Ottawa Solar to build a 10KW ground-mount grid-tie PV system this summer. Mike at Ottawa Solar was great. They are very responsive, and extremely knowledgeable. Mike provided realistic expectations of what to expect with the project and the performance. We have been live for 2 months now, and we are extremely pleased with the performance. So glad we installed it. We would definitely recommend people look at installing a PV system, especially these days with the various grant and loan programs available to offset some of the cost. 2021 update: the system had been in nearly a decade, and is still going strong. (Knock on wood!) Only 2 *very minor* service calls over that entire period, both fixed expeditiously. I understand the economics of both solar panels and microFIT have changed substantially, but these are still good guys if you are thinking off-grid or grid offset. 2016 [?]: In October 2011 I went with Ottawa Solar Power to install 20-panel rooftop solar under the Ontario microFit program. They were quick, efficient and thorough, and the system has operated virtually uninterrupted since then. Last month, possibly as a result of a severe thunderstorm, the system stopped supplying power to the grid. Once I noticed I called Ottawa Solar Power. We did some preliminary diagnosis that day on the phone, but determined a service call was necessary. The tech (Mike) was out today - the next day - and after diagnosis a maintenance-mode factory reset put us back on the air. Prompt & effective! Thanks! ~ David K

Mike and his team installed a complete solar power system at my off-grid, boat-access only cottage in the Laurentians. I first purchased a full offgrid setup from Mike at Ottawa Solar Power in 2003. A year later, my panels were stolen right off my racks! Mike jumped in and helped replace them at an (at the time) exceptional price. Then, just yesterday I saw a strange truck in my driveway. It was Mike, "just checking in". The timing was perfect because I thought I needed to purchase a new battery bank before winter. Mike came in, checked out my batteries and settings. He made some adjustments to my charge controller and gave me some advice to breathe some new life into my batteries. He could have just as easily went in for the kill and had me order a new battery bank before he left. But no, he didn't pressure me or try to sell me anything. He just gave me the advice and guidance I needed. You won't find better knowledge or customer service from anybody other than Ottawa Solar Power. I purchased a solar power system from Mike ~3 years ago at my new off-grid cottage. I purchased a system with 6 panels, charge controller, inverter, batteries, etc. to support a ~1400 sq foot cottage. The quality of the equipment has been excellent and well worth the investment. Prices were very reasonable, and I had definitely done my homework with comparative shopping before purchasing. Mike explained the entire system to me and recommended that I record it to video. Glad I did, because there are a lot of details and you need to understand the system to trouble shoot. He was very patient with my questions, and explained things clearly. Three years later (last weekend), I was having some issues with my batteries running low. Mike answered my call right away early on a Monday morning, and walked me through all possible issues throughout the day. Checking in with me by text throughout the day to check on readings. Turned out to be an issue with a water pump short that was draining the batteries; not the batteries at all. I was SO grateful to Mike for walking me through. We knew absolutely nothing about solar and with the recent government incentives we decided it may be the right time to install a solar system. We searched the internet and reached out to 5 companies gathering our quotes. The only company that not only answered our email within 24 hours (one of the 5 we contacted only replied to us after 4 weeks!) but also physically visited our property, climbed onto the roof, inspected its condition and measured the area, even used a device to pinpoint the optimal panel placing was Mike from Ottawa Solar Power. While here he took the time to answer all of our questions, which I am sure that after being in business for almost 30 years were basic to him, he nevertheless answered them in a way that was easy and clear to understand. Our installation is now complete and Mike and his team were fantastic to work with, they even helped us with a backup generator issue we had connecting to our electrical panel, fixed the issue and never charged us a dime. The system is performing better than we expected and is perfectly suited to the size of our home and our electrical needs. We cannot emphasize enough how fortunate we were in finding and choosing Mike to install our system. Five stars are definitely not enough to characterize Mike, his team and the dedication to ensuring the system is what is needed, what is desired and is running with absolute minimum downtime. In initial calls with Mike there was no sales pressure, more of a finding out what I was looking for and how he and his team could help achieve a cost effective, reliable and robust system to meet my needs. Mike did a fantastic job of tailoring the equipment and installation to existing equipment and available space. His and his teams knowledge of the convoluted process that ESA and Hydro force homeowners and installers to contort themselves through and patience with ESA changing and moving the target more often and evermore whimsically than the sane could seemingly bear was reassuring to behold. The installation is top notch and integrates well with my existing components seamlessly and is set up for future projects as requested in the initial phases of contact. As an engineer in the controls field for over 30 years the quality of components and attention to detail was excellent. After final ESA signoff, startup was uneventful as was the Hydro meter swap. Mike help with the necessary filings for grants and loans was invaluable and sped the process. Post installation support has been stellar as well. Through no fault of Mike, his team or the installation, one of the safety shut off modules failed and as designed shut down the system. A quick call to Mike and some phone diagnostics got the faulted section isolated and solar generation partially back online. Mike had the offending component removed, replaced, a ticket raised with the manufacturer and the system back on line in less than a day with a handshake and apologies for the failure that was no fault of his or his teams on a component that he had never seen fail before in years of installs. A man of his word that strives to keep it regardless of who or what does their best to upend and complicate an agreed upon project. My project saw a lot of regulatory lacks in performance and knowledge external to Mike and his team. Mike and his team expertly lobbied on my behalf and navigated the minefield that is ESA to get the project completed properly and on quote despite overruns beyond his control. I am glad I found and had Ottawa Solar Power, Mike and his team to help and guide me on my solar installation. I would recommend him highly and plan on using them to maintain and upgrade my existing system and assist in the install of a larger system at my lake house. G Rose ~ JR T
